"I have known Sam since he was 22 years old as a trainer in Planet Fitness. He was my Personal Trainer and I have been a less than disciplined client, he was my Muay Thai trainer at Fight Works Asia and now my Personal Fitness Advisor in his own gig. Sam and I have been associated with each other for a decade now and I have seen him grown from just a trainer to what I would now associate him as a educated trainer. With his accredited tertiary education in his choice of profession, Sam has evolved in his approach to fitness training.
I am a 55 years old executive who spends most time traveling on business, Sam has been most patient and consistent in chasing me up to carry on my training. With Sam's approach to training, I have become leaner, got rid of my middle age paunch and my strength has improved so much that I am lifting weights far heavier than what I expected.
I have told Sam once "Bro, you've made training intelligent as all sessions are well thought-out and personalized to each clients medical condition and level of fitness, I like to call your gym "A thinking man's gym". I have through time, referred like-minded busy executives with fitness and health issues to Sam and all have greatly improved and are extremely satisfied with Sam's attention.
Sam, thank you for sticking it out with me and making every session different to keep me engaged."
— Shawn Lim (Executive Director, Charles Monat Associates Pte Ltd)"I have started training recently with Sammy Phua from The System Gym. It is one of the most detailed and comprehensive training programs that I have ever partaken in with incredible results. Sometimes roles require a transformation and physical change of the body to suit a particular character. Working with Sammy as a trainer not only gets you results, but they are achievable in a realistic space of time.
"By understanding the movement of the body and the right type of training, his details are exquisite, precise and easy to follow. The main thing – the results."
— Keagan Kang (Actor)“Don't let the petite gym deceive you. This training space has a myriad of training solutions. Main coach Sammy's understanding of medical science and his profound knowledge and creativity will meet the expectations of a fun seeker to a no nonsense fitness fanatic. Having been through several trainers, Sammy is a rare find. His workouts are tailored, scientific and more importantly, he produces results. I am in a much better form and could feel the benefit of his routines in my muaythai / boxing training.
Sammy switches up his routines very frequently and keeps away from boring mundane workouts. Some of his routines can be replicated when I'm on travel. His work ethics needless to say, is superb. Having a reliable and dependable trainer is criteria to fit my training into a hectic lifestyle. I'd have no qualms to recommend Sammy to anyone who has special goals or medical conditions and people like me who desire an optimal workout with not a lot of time to spare.
Ain't a place if you want to work on big expensive machines but if you want a highly dependable fitness coach or join a bespoke Strength & Conditioning class with motivated but fun people, this may end your search. Oh! If you have medical conditions but wants guidance to achieve your fitness goals safely n effectively, his patience and knowledge will treat u well.
Uncompromised hygiene, nice bathrooms and a powder room!"
— Shireen Tan"I have had several Personal Trainers before but The System Gym has proven to be the best yet. This gym prides itself on personalization, the gym environment is also cheerful and happy. They’re very thoughtful, in advice they give you, the workout regime and post workout suggestions.
Sammy and Pearly work hand in hand to train me. Their style of Personal Training is encouraging and persistent. Unlike many others I have tried, this duo won’t put you down or raise their voices to spur you on. Plenty of personal trainers have made me feel like I was under a very strict diet. This backfired eventually. But with the duo at The System Gym, they encourage me with a suggested meal plan and take interest in my lifestyle to help me better achieve my goals of getting bikini ready in 3 months.
Beyond that, they take pride in explaining the reason and logic behind certain exercise movements. This helps me better understand what is happening to my body and the benefits of each motion."
— Charmaine Yee (Radio DJ)"After working with Pearly for the past few months, I thought I’d write a testimonial on the efforts of her hard work. I have been training with Pearly since the beginning of this year (2015). Pearly is a focus and diligent individual. What I learnt about her is that she listens (a virtue many lacks). Through this virtue, she understands what her clients want and need. She will design exercises to ensure it is effective and yet enjoyable.
During classes, she is particularly attentive in making sure the individual does the exercises correctly. She is encouraging and will push you hard to achieve your goals. I enjoy working with Pearly, she motivates me. Keep up the good work Pearly!"
— Jess Yeo"The first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks of exercise is having to put in that extra amount of effort to drag yourself to the gym / class upon the already tiring work / school day at hand. Well, Sammy takes that sluggishness away and makes you want to go for class. How? By being Superman, of course. You see, his obsession over superman isn't just because he likes the comic icon. He takes it upon himself to be like the super hero so that he can motivate his clients to push that little bit more. Where else can you find another PT instructor as driven as that? To physically take it upon himself to put your health as his life's work.
I started PT with Sammy for roughly over half a year now and I've learnt a lot of my body. Sammy takes your health seriously. In the first few lessons, he took full body weight / fat measurements and did a physical test to see how far I'm at on a fitness level. He then catered each lesson specifically targeting my needs, that naturally means each class he thinks up new ways to "torture" you into shape. Perfect for someone with attention deficit disorder like me. In the months that passed, he taught me how to use the right muscles and correct posture for various movements. It was not easy at first but gradually I got stronger and the movements became "easier" which in turn meant that he pushed me even harder by making the circuits more difficult. He assessed my improvements and made changes accordingly without me having to ask him to. A lot of people lack that initiative, not Sammy. He also taught me that your diet is just as important as your workout regime and did not hesitate when I asked him to do up a diet plan for me. Long story short, I see myself training with "Superman Sammy" way into my aged years with full trust that he will always do it with passion and my best interest at heart."
— Steph Er"Training sessions with Pearly are definitely challenging but it helps when your trainer is always in good spirits, happy to explain what muscles the different exercises are targeting and to show how it should be done... not to forget her patience as she overlooks my moaning and her encouragement when i'm 'dying'. Each session is different so there's variety! The gym is a nice space, conducive and non-intimidating for newbies. I look forward to every training with Pearly & feel confident I'm in good hands each session."
— Fely“I’ve been training with Sammy for a couple of years now, which for me is quite an achievement! The reason that I normally give up exercise regimes is because I get bored and lose motivation but Sammy has continued to change the workouts and keep things interesting – in fact I don’t think I’ve ever done the same thing twice.
The sessions are a good mix of resistance and Muay Thai which helps me to achieve my main objective of improving muscle tone and overall fitness, rather than losing weight. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Sammy’s PT sessions or group classes to anybody that is looking for results whilst maintaining interest and, equally as importantly, having fun.”
— Julie Kyte"An advantage one may credit to Sammy is also his inquisitiveness. Sammy is not excessively intrusive, but has honed the skill of asking questions that matter and that makes for a good diagnostician.
Academically, I am of the opinion that Samuel shows a keen interest in the medical field. He has taken it upon himself to sign up for courses that relate to the profession; he also goes about to meet doctors, dentists and psychologists, thereby familiarizing himself with the fraternity. In pursuit of his interest in medicine, one lauds his untiring quest for knowledge. He not only is pursuing a degree in sport physiology in a private university, but also spends time looking up books and documentary films that at the moment bear little relation to his field of study yet showing his love for anatomy and physiology."
— Dr Ivan Koh"The reason why I needed a personal trainer (and a good one) is because I felt that in this hectic and fast paced environment, I was not exercising enough and I needed an extra push. The passion that Sammy has for all his clients is commendable. His dedication and attention makes all the workouts not mundane. Many have commented that I have lost a considerable amount of weight and have also become much fitter.
On a personal note, I have kind of reached my goal but that is not enough. Under the watchful eyes of this wonderful trainer, he has made me realize the importance of getting the basics right first before conquering the numbers set out for me. In short, I always look forward to my PT sessions as I know that Sammy will be working on my weaknesses to bring out the best in me. Sometimes the training may be tough but am sure it will benefit me. In the long run, the numbers speak for themselves. Thanks Sammy for being such an awesome and dedicated trainer!"
